Understanding the Air Force Core Values

The Air Force Core Values are fundamental principles that guide every Airman’s actions, decisions, and conduct. These values are at the heart of everything we do, shaping our mission, our relationships, and impact on the world. My purpose for developing this article is for you to not only understand the importance of our core values but also why they exist and how they make a difference in everything we do. Whether in the skies or on the ground, these three core values serve as the foundation for all our Air Force personnel.

Integrity First is the cornerstone of the Air Force Core Values. It means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. This value is about honesty, responsibility, and accountability. Airmen are expected to uphold the highest moral and ethical standards, whether they're performing a task, making a decision, or interacting with others. Integrity builds trust and credibility, both essential for effective teamwork and leadership.

  • Tell the truth, even when it’s difficult

  • Take responsibility for your actions and their outcomes

  • Act with integrity regardless of the circumstances

Service Before Self emphasizes the importance of selflessness. It means putting the needs of the mission, the Air Force, and your fellow Airmen before personal interests or convenience. This value requires Airmen to make sacrifices in order to serve a greater purpose. Whether it’s time away from family, working long hours, or stepping up during challenging situations, Service Before Self reflects a commitment to something bigger than oneself.

  • Prioritize the mission or team’s needs over personal desires

  • Give your best effort to ensure the success of the team and the mission

  • Put aside distractions and focus on what’s best for the collective

Excellence in All We Do encourages Airmen to continually strive for the highest standards, whether in their professional or personal lives. This core value is not just about meeting expectations but exceeding them. Excellence is about improving every day, learning from mistakes, and never settling for mediocrity. It is a call to pursue continuous improvement, both in your technical abilities and leadership skills. Excellence drives innovation and ensures that the Air Force remains at the forefront of military readiness, technological advancement, and operational effectiveness.

  • Seek opportunities to grow, learn, and adapt

  • Complete every task to the highest standards, no matter how big or small

  • Take ownership of your actions and hold yourself to the highest standard

The Air Force Core Values—Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do—form the bedrock of everything an Airman stands for. These values guide our decisions, behaviors, and relationships, both on and off duty. When each Airman embodies these values, they contribute to a culture of respect, accountability, and professionalism. These core values aren’t just principles to aspire to; they are standards to live by, ensuring the success and reputation of the Air Force, both now and in the future. By upholding Integrity, Service, and Excellence, we become stronger, more effective leaders, and ensure that the mission is always accomplished with honor, pride, and dedication.
